History of Girl Scouts of Crowley's Ridge Council
Although the Girl Scout movement began in 1912 by our founder Juliette Low, it was not until the 1950's that Girl Scouting successfully "hit its stride" in Arkansas.
The cities of Forrest City and Newport, some 100 miles apart, claim the distinction of having the first Girl Scout troops organized in this area. With more troops to follow, it was in the year 1954 when the first steps were taken to form our council with offices designed to carry out the needs of our Girl Scouting programs. Initiated by the Jonesboro Jaycees with interested leaders, Crowley's Ridge Girl Scout Council became chartered by the Girl Scouts of the United States of America on January 26, 1955. Our first council office location was established at Newport. In 1956, the council office was moved to Main Street in Jonesboro. In 1974, the office was relocated to 2011 Stadium Boulevard, where it remained for 23 years. A new Program and Service Center was constructed in 1996 at 4803 East Johnson Avenue in Jonesboro.
Jonesboro, Arkansas, is located in the northeast corner of our state in an area called Crowley's Ridge - thus our name.
The Girl Scouts of Crowley's Ridge Council serves a 12-county area of Northeast Arkansas. These counties are grouped into 17 Service Units.
The membership began with 1769 girls and adults members. To present date, over 5500 girls and adult members are being served.
